Sauber: Villeneuve back to his best

23 March 2006

Peter Sauber returned to the Formula 1 paddock as a guest of the BMW Sauber F1 Team, the team which the Swiss has sold to the German car manufacturer last year. This way, the former team boss could celebrate two points with his former employees - and he was especially happy seeing Jacques Villeneuve being the one that scored the points for the team.

"I was very happy about the first two championship points that Jacques Villeneuve brought in for the team," Sauber told the German sports magazine 'Kicker'. "Last year I already said: Someone who was a world champion once won't forget how to race."

However, even for a world champion, it is not easy to get over a year of not racing, Sauber admits. Villeneuve had to take a break in 2004 after being sacked by BAR at the end of 2003. "Villeneuve got back his form as he used to race when he first entered Formula 1."

Sauber does not believe that the team will start winning races very soon though. "You have to allow the team to take its time. When did Renault buy Benetton - that was in 2000. And in 2005, they became world champion. It's important to give the new team time as well. There is no such thing as miracles in racing."
