Fernando Alonso says his main priority this season is winning the drivers' championship, above and beyond the constructors' title for McLaren. The reigning champion closed to within three points of leader Lewis Hamilton with a dominant win at Monza on Sunday.
When asked whether it would be more special to win the title in a year that has seen McLaren fight so many problems off the track, Alonso replied, "It means a lot to become world champion, but at least for me it's not special if there are problems around the team."
"For whatever reason, the constructors' championship is not really a big factor from the driver's point of view. Of course I've won two drivers' and constructros' championships so I know how important it is for the team and how much people enjoy winning the constructors'. I've said all my life that as a driver on a scale of one to ten on importance to win, the drivers' championship is ten and the constructors' championship is eight points."
