FIA 'disappointed but not surprised'

FIA 'disappointed but not surprised'

19 June 2009

The FIA has responded to FOTA's Friday decision of the group electing to move from Formula One and form a breakaway series next year. The two parties, which have been in disagreement over issues such as a €45m budget cap for some time, have therefore failed to reach an agreement as the sport's governing body replied to the letter.

The FIA, headed by Max Mosley, stated that it is 'disappointed by not surprised' at the outcome of the arguement, which sees all current teams bar Williams and Force India depart the sport at the end of 2009. The governing body, which believes that a number of participants within FOTA were headed towards such an outcome for some time, also reminded that the end of Friday will mark the deadline for full, unconditional entries to be submitted for entry to next year's championship.

The brief FIA statement reads:

'The FIA is disappointed but not surprised by FOTA's inability to reach a compromise in the best interests of the sport. It is clear that elements within FOTA have sought this outcome throughout the prolonged period of negotiation and have not engaged in the discussions in good faith.

The FIA cannot permit a financial arms race in the Championship nor can the FIA allow FOTA to dictate the rules of Formula One.

The deadline for unconditional entries to the 2010 FIA Formula World Championship will expire this evening.

The 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship entry list will be announced tomorrow (Saturday).'

A fully detailed FIA statement will be published later on Friday.
