Brawn 'returning the favour' to FOTA
22 June 2009Brawn GP insists that it will continue to follow the route of FOTA, not least to thank fellow members of the group for their continued support leading up to the start of this year's championship. With the team out of F1 after the departure of Honda in December, Brawn CEO Nick Fry stresses that the importance of teams' unity remains crucial ahead of an FIA meeting on Wednesday.

With the relationship between FOTA (Formula One Teams Association, representing all teams apart from Williams and Force India) and the FIA (governing body to F1, headed by Max Mosley) now having reached breaking point as the former announced a breakaway series on Friday, a - perhaps final - meeting between the two parties on Wednesday of this week will be the most vital yet with regards to the future of the sport. "There's a lot at stake and obviously, not being backed by a car manufacturer, it's only Ross (Brawn) and I who don't have very deep pockets," admitted Fry. "It's more of a concern than for the others, but we wouldn't have teamed up with the FOTA teams if we didn't have confidence in a good outcome."

Although contact between FOTA and the FIA now remains principally through statements, the two parties' meeting on Wednesday will be of extreme importance under the current circumstances, with the latter having postponed the publishing of the final entry list to the 2010 World Championship. With the assistance from fellow teams having been in abundance to aid Brawn's survival, though, Fry stressed the strength bonds in the FOTA group: "The manufacturers have supported us right through the winter; both Ferrari and Mercedes offered us engines instantly - we need to be loyal to them; they have supported us thus far and they will continue to do so.
"The FIA meeting on Wednesday is critical to what happens. Whilst it's a concern, we're not lying awake at night - the teams have very clearly stated how they see the future: we have entered the championship with conditions and the question now is whether those conditions will be fulfilled. The ball is in the court of the FIA and we hope that there is a balanced discussion at the World Council on Wednesday."
