Campos design started in March
30 June 2009The Campos team has not been phased by the current political arguments which rage in Formula One and is continuing the design of its first Formula One car, which was started in March. The Dallara-built cars, which will first make an appearance next year, will be already a year in the making by the time the 2010 season gets underway.
With next year's championship still three quarters of a year away, both the team and constructor elected to take the gamble of starting its design process before its entry had been accepted by F1 governing body the FIA. "We are continuing as if nothing has happened," Gian Paolo Dallara, owner of the company carrying his own name, told GPWeek of the ongoing war of words between FOTA (Formula One Teams Association) and the FIA.
"We started designing three months ago; we took the risk with Campos that, if our entry was not accepted, we would throw away three months of work. We took this decision because we decided that it would be nearly impossible to design and produce an F1 car in the short time from June until the 2010 season."
With the bizarre situation still alive in that full technical regulations for next season remain unknown, the Spanish team is proceeding with its plans. "Our car will be two-wheel drive, without the possibility to refuel and without KERS," Italian Dallara continued. "We have worked on a 2009 specification, adding the extra fuel capacity required for 2010; we have very clear plans about the design of our car and we are aware of what is possible within out limited budget."
