Williams to celebrate 40 years at Goodwood

01 July 2009

The Williams team will be celebrating the end of its fourth decade at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend. Established in 1979, the Formula One outfit founded by Sir Frank Williams and Patrick Head has since gone on to clinch 113 Grand Prix wins and 9 Constructors' titles.

With the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed of one fans' best opportunities to get up close and personal with motorsport stars and cars, Williams will be at the centre of this year's celebrations. A selection of the Grove team's drivers, past and present, will be on hand for autograph signing with a number of cars being driven up the famous Goodwood Hill. Commentating legend Murray Walker will be present to chat with Sir Frank himself as drivers Jacques Laffite and David Coulthard join them. Also in West Sussex will be Alan Jones and Damon Hill, Williams World Champions of 1980 and 1996.

The championship-winning cars of Jones and Hill will be on display plus other vehicles such as a 1970 De Tomaso-Cosworth type 505 and the 2007 Toyota-powered FW29. "It will be great for me and for all of the people that have been a part of Williams, or supported the team over the years, to be there to see a broad selection of our cars," said Sir Frank.

"The Festival of Speed is a very special event for us," continued current driver Nico Rosberg, who has finished fifth in the last two Grands Prix. "It has a great atmosphere and I really encourage people to go along and witness one of the greatest motorsport spectacles of the year!"

Also at Goodwood will be ex-F1 driver Johnny Herbert, who will be steering a 2009 BTCC Team Dynamics Honda up the rise on Friday. "It's great to be back at Goodwood and it never ceases to amaze me how much the event just grows and grows year upon year," said Johnny. "It has an added 'extra' for me this year because, for the first time in my racing career, I will be driving a British Touring Car. For me to have my first run in a touring car up the Goodwood Hill is very special indeed."
