McLaren KERS gaining 3 tenths per lap

11 July 2009

Mercedes-Benz Motorsport is prepared for one of its biggest weekends of the year as qualifying day for the German Grand Prix begins. Providers of three of the ten F1 teams, mixed results are expected for the manufacturer whose engines are found in the back of the Brawn, McLaren and Force India cars.

With six of the field's twenty cars powered by Mercedes powerplants, hundreds of the company's employees will be filling the Turn 1 grandstand at the Nürburgring as the German Grand Prix title returns to the track for the first time in twenty-four years. With Mercedes' highly-developed KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) unit generally regarded as the best in the field, optimism is high at the Nürburgring.

"This looked quite encouraging, I have to say, and definitely better than I'd anticipated before the sessions today," said Mercedes' motorsport boss Norbert Haug after Friday practice, with the McLaren works car of Lewis Hamilton at the top of the timesheets. "We certainly did not post 'show times' four our home race; our speed was genuine and quite a bit better than in the last races. I certainly don't expect us to be fastest tomorrow but if everything comes together we probably will be in a position to deliver a solid job on race day."

With the World Champion having led the way, Finnish team-mate Kovalainen's session finished with a contrasting 17th place. "Heikki's car was not on the same technical level as Lewis', which had new pieces that only arrived last night and which are not yet available in sufficient numbers," Haug continued. "Our KERS hybrid is a good help around this circuit and gives us more than three tenths of a second per lap."
