High-flying Buemi takes off in Switzerland

17 July 2009

Birrfeld in Switzerland was the setting as Toro Rosso driver Sébastien Buemi experienced his highest high of the year so far and also the highest g-forces as the 20-year-old was corkscrewed through the air onboard one of Red Bull's Air Race planes.

In the capable hands of Red Bull Air Race World Champion Hannes Arch, a fellow countryman, Buemi took on the job of co-pilot this Tuesday. Arch, who flies for Team Abu Dhabi, demonstrated incredible speeds of up to 230mph (370km/h) with g-forces of up to 10 times that of gravity.

"It's hard for me to even imagine what Hannes does in race situations," said a stunned Buemi once two feet were back on the ground. "Even our flight today was right on the limit! It was great fun, even though I sometimes didn't know which way was up or down!" The only debutant in F1 this season also commented that he hopes to entertain his compatriot on the race track at some point in the future.

"Sébastien did really well," added the commander. "I put the plane through its paces up there and we did some pretty hard manoeuvres. However, we didn't overdo it - after all, the two-seater can't match my race plane for performance."
