Having looked a favourite for a 2010 Toyota drive due to his superb performances in the last two races of the 2009 season, Kamui Kobayashi has been left out in the open after the Japanese marque announced its exit from Formula One on Wednesday. The 23-year-old is hoping for a seat with one of the sport's new teams, though, with Lotus being especially attractive.
Whilst subbing for the injured Timo Glock in the final two races of the season, Toyota test driver and current GP2 Asia Champion Kobayashi made an instant impression, with drives to 9th place in Brazil and 6th in Abu Dhabi, with the latter picking up three World Championship points in the process.

"Obviously, my place at Toyota is now lost," he told the French media. "I was close to signing a contract for 2010…but, with four new teams on the grid, there are still options and if I had to choose one, I'd choose Lotus."
Kamui also revealed that Toyota, despite having departed F1, is assisting both himself and compatriot Kazuki Nakajima in finding drives for next year. "They're working with my agent and I to help me find a drive," Kobayashi explained. "It's the same for Kazuki. Toyota has told me that, while they may not be able to compete in the sport, they will help me with my career as much as possible."
