Luca di Montezemolo has implied that he will resign as Chairman of the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) at the end of the year. The Italian, also President of Ferrari and Fiat, would be the second major figure to leave the faction after Vice Chairman and Toyota team President John Howett did likewise earlier this month.
With FOTA currently representing all teams in the 2009 field plus 2010 debutants Campos Meta, a new leader could take the reigns ahead of next season, should di Montezemolo leave after leading the committee through its first full season.
"I took up the President role because I felt it was good to have teams competing on the track and talking out of it, like sports professionals - that is what we did," 62-year-old di Montezemolo explained to Autosprint. "However, I have another job and I can't do everything so I really think that I will step down at the end of the year."
