Ferrari's Michael Schumacher set the pace in Saturday morning's first free practice session with a lap of 1m14.944s in the warm and dry conditions where air temperature reached seventeen degrees Centigrade and the track twenty-five degrees.
David Coulthard finished second in the revised McLaren but was half a second behind Schumacher. Jarno Trulli was just 0.02s behind Coulthard with the second Renault of Alonso in fourth - the team looking strong on home soil.

Ralf Schumacher's replacement, Marc Gené, finished thirteenth fastest while McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen spent most of the practice in the pits - the team electing to change his clutch after sensing some problems with the component.
