Ralf Schumacher aims to come back soon

12 July 2004

After his serious accident at Indianapolis, Ralf Schumacher still isn't in a condition to return to the cockpit, but he is keen on coming back soon.  When Ralf returned from the US Grand Prix and his doctors found that he had suffered a vertebrae injury, they told him that he would need approximately eight to twelve weeks to recover. But, being a committed racing driver with a highly professional attitude, the German would love to return to the wheel as soon as possible.

Ralf contacts the BMW WilliamsF1 Team on a regular basis and has confirmed several times that he is working hard to achieve a condition enabling him to perform an early comeback. Although his brother Michael - who missed six races after his Silverstone shunt back in 1999 - has advised Ralf to take it easy, the BMW WilliamsF1 Team driver hopes to be able to come back earlier than his doctors have predicted.

"Had my condition been good enough, I would have returned to the cockpit for Magny-Cours," explained Ralf, thus denying all rumours that his motivation might have suffered because of the accident. "I'm desperate to come back as soon as possible to successfully contest the remainder of the season for the BMW WilliamsF1 Team."

BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen is also convinced that Ralf is highly motivated to contest further races this year. "I have talked to Ralf and he was rather optimistic to be able to come back earlier than the doctors have advised," said Theissen. "Ralf believes to be able to be back in time for the Hungarian Grand Prix, but I'm not so sure if his doctors will allow him to do so."

Be that as it may, one thing is clear: the winner of the 2001 German Grand Prix won't have recovered in time to contest this year's race, taking place on 25th July at the Hockenheimring.
