Memorial at 'Senna Chicane' - Adelaide
03 May 2004Even in Australia, they mourned for Ayrton Senna. At about dusk on Saturday evening, a small congregation stood at the 'Senna Chicane' on the old Adelaide street-circuit and remembered a fallen champion.
Ten years ago - on May 1, 1994 - the Brazilian died at the Imola race track. 34-year-old Senna won his last grand prix in Adelaide, capital of South Australia, in November 1993 - all the while setting an unmatched lap record.
He also notched up six of his record 65 career poles on the city's streets. 'Because the GP was here, Adelaide has been the focus of the fan club,' said national president of the Ayrton Senna Fan Club of Australia, Richard Devitt.
A memorial plaque, featuring Senna's handprints, remains at the Senna Chicane. Devitt met Senna only once, in the Victoria Park F1 pitlane in 1993. 'I was overawed,' he recalled.
