Jaguar fix Webber's engine fault
04 May 2004F1 team Jaguar has got to the bottom of a problem which affected Mark Webber's run to the flag in the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola a couple of weeks ago. Head of car performance Dr Mark Gillan said the problem 'cost us places. 'And, frustratingly, it probably cost us a point,' he said on Monday.
Webber's defective R5 car returned to the United Kingdom shortly after the race and it was quickly sent to the Cosworth HQ in Northampton for an investigation. Gillan said engineers 'worked hard' to understand the fault. 'It was the first time this year we've had a engine fault at a race,' said Mark.
Last Friday, Jaguar sent an improved R5 to Ford's private Lommel test-circuit for straight-line running so that Spain-spec aero revisions could be tried. 'We also [focused] on ... start performance,' added Mark Gillan, while managing director David Pitchforth said engine 'dyno tests' have also been completed.
