Schumacher is Ferrari's 'clear number one'
12 May 2004Every racer wants to see Formula One drivers on 'equal number one status.' That's the claim of former-podium-winner-turned-television-commentator Martin Brundle, but he conceded that Ferrari adopts the more 'common sense' mentality.
At Maranello, world champion Michael Schumacher is the clear number one. But Brundle said the German's superior contract is a 'big negative' about him. "You can't escape that Michael hides from a strong team-mate," the former McLaren ace continued, "and that weighs into the best-of-all-time debate. He is better than Rubens Barrichello."
Martin, who retired in late 1996, was once team-mate to Schumacher. "The guy is just amazing," he recalls of those Benetton days. "He's just so damn fast. And he's even better now."
