Former BMW Motorsport Director, Gerhard Berger, compares the first part of the 2004 season, from the BMW WilliamsF1 Team's point of view, with last year.

Ferrari was not as dominant at the beginning of the 2003 season as it is now, but still the BMW WilliamsF1 Team was in a similar situation as it first had to close the gap to the winning teams, which finally happened when Juan Pablo Montoya won the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix.
However, in 2004 it seems increasingly difficult to actively work on turning it all around as Gerhard Berger explains: "The situation is different than it was last year. At that time we were aware that the car was not well balanced, therefore we had something to start working with."

"But this season the drivers are happy with the car's behaviour", Mario Theissen's former colleague added, "They said that the car reacts to changes and that the balance is fine. The drivers get a nice feedback, a nice feeling from the car, but finally they have to realise they are not quick enough. That's what makes it all so difficult."
In order to close the gap, the BMW WilliamsF1 Team is testing this week at Silverstone and Monza to find new areas for improvement. Besides set-up work with the Williams F1 BMW FW26 and tyre evaluation runs, several modified parts for the next races are due to be tested.
