At Indianapolis, BAR-Honda driver Takuma Sato finished third. But what might have been had the Brackley-based team opted to pit the cars for service in a long Safety Car period to clear the shunted Ralf Schumacher?
"What on earth are they doing?" wondered one commentator. "The situation was complex," explained technical director Geoff Willis.
"We didn't pit them and it should have worked for us. But Schumacher got out in front of us behind the Safety Car and he stayed there and held us up."
Both BAR cars, meanwhile, suffered poor race-starts. "I lost places to Alonso and Raikkonen," said Jenson Button, who retired.
