Jaguar regret promoting inexperienced Klien
30 June 2004Jaguar managing director David Pitchforth admitted Thursday that the Formula One outfit made a mistake in promoting rookie driver Christian Klien to their race team.
Pitchforth told Motorsport News that Jaguar originally wanted the 19-year-old Austrian solely as a test driver but elevated him into a race car because he brought financial backing from the Red Bull soft drink group. "We lobbied Red Bull very hard to make Christian the tester and put somebody more experienced in the race seat. They now admit that was the better move," said Pitchforth.
The inexperienced Austrian has failed to score a single point and made several dramatic errors in a disastrous start to the Formula One campaign.
