Sunday's British Grand Prix at Silverstone might be the last. That is what Martin Brundle - formerly the track-owning BRDC's chairman - replied when asked if the F1 calendar can cope with a British and London GP. "We have to be careful we've got one [GP] let alone two," he said.

F1 team boss Sir Frank Williams thinks the problem is more fundamental with Britain starting to lose the focus of the international motor racing scene. He told The Independent: "The sands are shifting."

BAR's David Richards agrees the 'general intellect' of Formula One is still based in Britain "but we have to be very careful that it can be retained."

Triple world champion Sir Jackie Stewart said threats are coming from 'France and Germany and Italy,' with the Asia-Pacific region also quickly catching-on. He said Britain therefore 'cannot afford' to lose the Grand Prix.
