Frank Williams: Senna was smarter than Schumi

14 July 2004

Ayrton Senna was 'more intelligent' than F1's Michael Schumacher. That's the claim of Sir Frank Williams, who admits he admires the latter more than any other driver but the late Senna would always have out-smarted him.

"[Senna] was just as quick [as Schumacher]," Frank Williams told the Telegraph. "He was also just as brave [as Michael] but probably more intelligent."

Senna, who died in a Williams just three grands prix after signing for Frank's team, could have become 'President of Brazil,' according to the team owner. Frank beamed: "I always thought that. He was a terribly clever guy."

Senna always resided pole position in negotiations with Williams "and you had to be very good at chess," the wheelchair-bound grand prix principal laughed. "He'd always planned at lease three moves and four counter-moves. He had astonishing mental preparation."

But don't ask Williams if he misses the great Ayrton Senna. "Not really," he told the newspaper. "It's been ten years. He's gone. I have to look ahead."
