Coulthard: Button could have win at Hockenheim
26 July 2004Jenson Button could've beaten Michael Schumacher if an FIA rule did not penalise F1 drivers for suffering engine blow-ups, David Coulthard said at Hockenheim. The BAR-driving Englishman's high fuel load indicated he could have secured pole and his Michelin tyres were a match for Ferrari's Bridgestones, David insisted.

Team principal Dave Richards agreed it was Buttons' best drive ever. "We were jumping up and down in front of the TV screens," he beamed.
But one aspect of the BAR's performance has left technical director Geoff Willis scratching his head -- he doesn't know why a Renault seemed to have more power. In Button's duel with Fernando Alonso, the latter Spaniard - despite driving a reportedly less-powerful V10 - was able to out-drag the mighty Honda engine. "We were surprised," said Willis. "It could be a lack of mid-range power, or maybe our traction is not as good."
