'We need a bigger budget' - Jaguar's Purnell

13 August 2004

Jaguar is asking for a bigger '05 budget. The coffers were stripped after the Niki Lauda-led '02 debacle, but new boss Tony Purnell thinks the time is now right to pressure bankrollers Ford for more. "It's reasonable to assume that," he said in Budapest.

But fans of the Leaping Cat shouldn't start dreaming of Ferrari or Toyota-esque numbers like $400m -- Purnell thinks Milton-Keynes is doing a pretty good job. "I'd like to see us do a bit more testing," Purnell admitted. "It hurts when you are criticised for having poor reliability but our record is actually hugely improved over previous years. More testing would help that."

Improved competitiveness with a solid foundation, Purnell claims, will therefore lead to increased sponsorship attractiveness and less reliance on the carmaker.

Meanwhile, departing team driver Mark Webber said there were 'no more' performance steps on the Cosworth V10 engine due for the rest of the year.
