Spa is back and 'so much fun'

25 August 2004

Every F1 driver is gearing up to race on his favourite circuit, Spa-Francorchamps, after a one-year political absence. "I'm so happy that Belgium is back," said Ferrari's Michael Schumacher, who debuted and then won here in 1991 and 1992.

So what's so special about the historic track in the Ardennes? Even if today's F1 racers make Spa easier, Schumacher said driving corners like Eau Rouge or Blanchimont are 'thrilling. "And it's a challenge," added the German.

There's also the racing history, the changeable weather, the very long track length which influences strategy -- and 'Eau Rouge.' Jaguar's Mark Webber reckons all the corner's hype is justified. "It's so fast," said the Aussie, "and just so much fun."

It's also the topic of much debate -- can it be taken flat-out? "That is very difficult," said Sauber's Giancarlo Fisichella. "In qualifying we're flat there," the Roman explained, "though not always. This year it'll depend on the weight of your fuel."
