Bruni recovering from refuelling fire
12 September 2004 |
| Bruni has escaped without serious injury |
Minardi's Gianmari Bruni is recovering after a frightening refuelling fire during his second scheduled pit stop at Monza this afternoon. Bruni was making his second stop and as the fuel hose disengaged fuel continued to pour out over the hot exhaust of the Minardi. The car caught fire dramatically and mechanics quickly doused the flames with their extinguishers.
Bruni clambered from the cockpit and was struggling to breathe. He fell to the ground and lay still for a couple of minutes while his close friend - Toyota's team doctor - attended to him.
Bruni inhaled the powder of the fire extinguishers and this caused an irritation in his lungs. After a tense minute Bruni was recovering well and has been taken to the medical centre for precautionary tests.
