Brit GP is 'essential' to F1 - reaction
01 October 2004It's 'sad' and 'disgusting' that Formula One would farewell Silverstone, but there is still hope for the oldest event in the modern world championship. Ron Dennis' Woking-based McLaren squad is one of the six grand prix teams that find a home not far from the disused war airfield in Northamptonshire. "Hopefully the circumstances between now and the 2005 event will change in a way which will allow the grand prix to be run," he told UK newspaper Guardian.
Damon Hill, another Englishman, won the British Grand Prix at Silverstone back in 1994, for Oxfordshire-based Williams. He said: "It's very sad. The sad fact is, the show goes where the money is, and that should worry every true motor racing fan."
Martin Brundle raced grand prix cars a dozen times at the British circuit, and - until recently - was chairman of the track-owning British Racing Drivers' Club. "There are core races," said the 45-year-old, "and this is one of them. Silverstone is essential to the world of Formula One."
1992 winner Nigel Mansell called Bernie Ecclestone's decision to drop the axe "a disgrace. I don't know if there are still negotiations going on behind the scenes but I certainly hope so."
