BAR will turn 100 at Suzuka. The Brackley-based Formula One team lurched into the pinnacle of motor sport back in Melbourne, 1999, when it optimistically boasted of winning its first ever grand prix. In Japan, perhaps for the first time, current team principal David Richards believes the team might finally be right to plan a champagne shower. "By way of an additional incentive," he said, "BAR is proud to be celebrating its 100th grand prix in Japan."
BAR also broke the 100-point (in a season) barrier last time out in Shanghai. Jenson Button thinks the Honda-powered car will go well on Suzuka's curves. "Our car changes direction really well," the Englishman explained.
Honda owns the Suzuka track, and Button's team-mate Takuma Sato has a huge following in his home country. "Driving there is unbelievable," said the 27-year-old, who'll be a busy boy in Japan.
BAR has a nine-point advantage over Renault for second place in the constructors' championship.
Despite a 'Suzuka Special' engine step, though, technical director Geoff Willis denied BAR can take a more adventurous approach to the race in Japan. "We will take minimum risks at Suzuka," he said, "to maintain and, we hope, extend our lead over Renault."
