Nose important, but not vital - Williams tech chief

10 November 2004

Williams raised eyebrows last year when they launched the radical looking FW26, because its nose was a dramatic departure from conventional design. Well into a disappointing season, the team ditched the radical nose and reverted to a more conventional design. Since then Andrea Terzi, responsible for the nose, has left the team.

"There are various points where it was better or worse", Sam Michael, WilliamsF1's Technical Director told 'Pitpass', "Now the car works better without it. But it's because it's so visual that people concentrate on it, whereas in reality it's no different to changing a flip-up or a chimney or something like that."

Michael explained, "When you change a nose pack, it's 'ah-ha, they must have made a big mistake on that'. In reality it just works better, but at the start of the year it was definitely working better with that type of nose."
