Gené: Sudden I'm a good driver again!

29 November 2004

For some people it came as a surprise that Marc Gené is no longer a Williams test driver but is now wearing the colours of rival Ferrari. Gené is not pleased about how things unfolded Williams and told F1Racing.net in Barcelona he believes he was not treated well by Williams. "Last year in Monza I was doing well, and now I am all of a sudden a bad driver," he said.

Gené seems happy that he is not with Williams anymore. Not only because he is driving a faster car, but more how people see him. "Last week I was not a good driver, but this week everybody looks differently at me."

When Ralf Schumacher was out of business for a while, after his crash in Indianapolis, Gené stepped up from his test driver role at Williams and replaced him. But after two races, he had to move over for Antonio Pizzonia. "I think it was wrong. Last year I replaced Ralf in Monza. I was fit and I did great - everybody said. And this year I was not fit and a bad driver. I can ensure you that I am a better driver this year then I was last year. And I did a better job. Sometimes Formula 1 does not make sense."

But in the end, Gené is happy how things went. "After all I am in a better position and driving for Ferrari is like a dream come true. I felt that it was not working out with Williams anymore and I contacted all the top teams. Everybody was interested, but Ferrari was the first coming back to me, to make a deal. The car is much better then I expected. Ferrari has the best car for sure."

Of course Marc Gené is very useful for Ferrari. He knows the Williams car very well and did a lot of mileage with Michelin tyres. "But drivers do not know every technical part of a car," he explains. "Of course Ferrari asked me about the team, but I do not know everything. I can compare some things, but I am not an engineer. The same story goes with the tyres. I only tested for Michelin in the early stages of the program."

Marc Gené concluded by saying he does not expect to race for Ferrari. "And I do not know who will replace Michael or Rubens if necessary. I do not know Luca's contract, but he knows the car much better. I do not expect to race."
