Stewart slam for Ford pullout
29 December 2004Ford made a mistake by selling Jaguar and racing out of Formula One, according to Sir Jackie Stewart. The Scot, whose four decade-long ambassadorial role with the US-owned carmaking giant is at an end, criticised the decision as 'an oversight.'
Triple world champion Stewart added: "One of the great things about Ford is that the company was a global thinker. I believe not having a presence in Formula One will have long-term implications for the company."
The 65-year-old admitted to feeling 'total shock' when he discovered that Ford would not fund Jaguar or Cosworth Racing beyond 2004. "Even if it is not the case in America," he commented, "grand prix racing still draws the biggest (global) TV audience."
Ford powered Stewart, founder of the Milton Keynes-based F1 team he later sold to the carmaker to be renamed Jaguar in 2000, to three drivers' F1 titles -- in 1969, '71 and '73.
