Jackie Stewart looks set to take a lesser role in the running of the British Racing Drivers' Club in the future. The BRDC owns the Silverstone circuit and promotes the British Grand Prix.
Stewart was elected president of the BRDC in 2000 and has been a crucial part of the negotiations with Bernie Ecclestone to keep F1 at Silverstone until 2009 at least. However, Stewart's tenure hit rough seas last month when a run in with BRDC club chairman Ray Bellm resulted in Bellm leaving the club.
Now Stewart says that he is getting too busy with other business commitments to devote enough time to the BRDC.
"Whilst my professional activities both in the UK and internationally, such as my new and increasing role with the Royal Bank of Scotland (Williams sponsors in 2005) and my other contracted business relationships make it impossible for me to give the same time to the BRDC as I have in the past," Stewart told Autsport.
