'Max should be axed'
20 June 2005In 2002, Paul Stoddart cried in Mark Webber's arms as the Minardi boss revelled in a two-point finish. At Indy, the disgusted Australian didn't even watch as he offered a thumbs-down to Christijan Albers and Patrick Friesacher's 7-point haul.
It's Minardi's best result in 16 years. "I don't care," Stoddart - then aiming fire at Max Mosley - moaned at Indy. "In any other walk of business there would be calls for the person who did this to resign."
Indeed, the six car procession - following Michelin's fourteen car boycott - may just have killed F1's latest bid for popularity in the United States. "If we do come back," said David Coulthard, "half the crowd in the stands today won't."
Triple world champion Sir Jackie Stewart agreed that the debacle could have a 'domino effect' for F1 in America. He told the 'Daily Telegraph': "Whether the people will want to renew their contract is another thing."
