FIA wants to do medical check on Salo
23 June 2005The FIA wants to do a medical check on former Formula 1 driver Mika Salo after tiny carbon pieces were found in his lungs, according to an article in Finland's daily newspaper 'Ilta-Sanomat'.
Apparently, the little pieces originally came from the brakes of Formula 1 cars. "There are many little pieces in my lungs. I wonder how many Michael Schumacher has, who has been driving in Formula 1 ten years longer than I did", Salo said.
Mika Salo drove a total of eight years and 110 races in Formula 1 from 1994 to 2002. In 1999, he replaced Michael Schumacher, who had to sit out six races due to a broken leg. Salo had his biggest success during his time at Ferrari by almost winning a race in Hockenheim and finishing third in Monza.
