Gené surprised by Ferrari V8

12 August 2005

Marc Gené was tasked with giving Ferrari's new V8 engine its first outing on Tuesday and continued to test the 2006 power plant on Wednesday. Next year's technical regulations require teams to switch from their current V10 engines to less powerful V8s.

"I feel very positive about the V8 engine particularly in terms of its driveability and acceleration," Gené told the Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper. "In acceleration we notice the power difference between the V10 and V8 but the lap times aer not that much slower when you consider the engine has less horse-power and we aren't operating it near its maximum potential."

"The engine sounds quite different and is more intense than the V10," Gené added. "I'd tested a hybrid engine so the change was quite gradual for me but when my colelagues test it for the first time they'll be surprised at both the sound and power."

The V8 engine was fitted to a 2004 Ferrari. Previously Gené had tested a V10 engine with two of its cylinders disabled.
