McLaren one-two in qualifying
03 September 2005 / Results / PhotosKimi Raikkonen put his engine change penalty out of his mind and marched to the top of the timing sheets in qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix. Montoya was second fastest ahead of championship leader Fernando Alonso.
It was a hot and sunny afternoon at Monza. Antonio Pizzonia was the first driver to take to the track having replaced an unwell Nick Heidfeld this morning. He ended the session a lowly sixteenth, two places behind Webber.
Michael Schumaches was out early in the session following his retirement from the Turkish Grand Prix but a determined drive from the German saw him set the seventh fastest time.
The BAR Hondas were also on fine form during qualifying with Jenson Button qualifying fourth and Takuma Sato fifth ahead of Toyota of Jarno Trulli.
Giancarlo Fisichella made two glaring mistakes on his lap - understeering at the first chicane and running wide at the first Lesmo. Alonso put in a strong lap though to slot in ahead of the BAR Hondas and just behind Montoya.
Kimi Raikkonen drove a blinding lap and despite a small waver in the final corner, snatched pole from team mate Montoya by almost 0.2s. While he may have been fastest Raikkonen's engine change penalty means he will start from eleventh.
