Montoya knew it was over

17 October 2005

After running over a loose drain cover at the Shanghai circuit, Juan Pablo Montoya knew his race was over. The Colombian pulled into the pits where his team replaced his damaged tyre, but they knew there was likely to be more damage to the body of his car and despite trying to continue, McLaren soon realised Montoya's race was run.

"It's sad," said Montoya. "I went on the kerb on the exit and as soon as I went on there one of the drains came out and cut my tyre. You can't see it, the kerbs are painted and there are already steps there so you can't see. I knew straight away there was a lot of damage on the car and it would be difficult to continue, but we tried."

The loose drain cover ripped through the floor of Montoya's McLaren and cut through his car's cooling systems.
