| Knockout qualifying gets green light |
Formula One will ditch the current one-lap qualifying system for a brand new knockout system in 2006, despite a number of objections from F1 teams. The FIA has announced the change following a meeting with Bernie Ecclestone and team bosses on Monday.
Qualifying will now take part in three phases. The five slowest cars will drop out after a first 15-minute session, another five will drop out after a second 15-minute session. The remaining ten cars will then compete for pole in a final 20-minute session.
