Horner: Newey is bigger than Schumacher
08 November 2005On Tuesday morning Red Bull Racing announced it has signed top F1 designer Adrian Newey. Red Bull team boss Christian Horner said he would rather sign up Adrian Newey than Michael Schumacher. "It's a massive recruitment for us," he said.
Horner told Reuters in an interview: "Given the choice of Adrian Newey or Michael Schumacher, I'd go for Adrian every time. It's of that kind of magnitude. I think that it sends out exactly the right message in that we are totally serious about what we want to do and what we want to achieve."
Cars designed by Newey have won numerous F1 championship titles and Newey will be missed at the Woking based team. Red Bull and Newey were in talks for a while already before it came to a deal. "Adrian and I have spoken on and off throughout the season, generally more than anything else, and it has really accelerated since the last race," explained Horner. "He was keen to take on a new challenge and I'm delighted that we managed to get him to join us."
Red Bull is spending a lot of money currently on its Formula One team. But it wasn't the money that made Newey choose to join Red Bull. "Adrian's motivation wasn't money or fiscal," said Horner. "His motivation was to take on a new challenge within a smaller team environment. I have a decent relationship with him and I think he sees the aspirations of the team and Red Bull and it feels right.
