Monteiro to keep F1 ride
08 November 2005Tiago Monteiro will beat the likes of Anthony Davidson and Takuma Sato to the final 2006 race seat at F1 team 'Midland'. The Portuguese sport newspaper 'Record' wrote that the 29-year-old from Oporto had signed a one-year contract to stay at the renamed Silverstone based team he debuted for this season.
Backed by state-controlled oil company Galp, Monteiro - a former Champ Car driver with an impressive reliability record in his rookie F1 season - will drive the 'M16' car next to new teammate and former Minardi driver, Dutchman Christijan Albers.
The news, reportedly to be confirmed by the Alex Shnaider-owned team on Tuesday or Wednesday morning, puts an end to the hopes of un-sponsored BAR tester Anthony Davidson, who earlier tested the yellow Jordan racer.
'Record' said the information came from a government official, and included such detail as the location of the contract signing -- a Lisbon hotel.
With Albers' Dutch countryman Nicky Pastorelli to steer the 'Friday' car in 2006, Monteiro - a podium getter at the ill-fated 2005 US grand prix - would complete Midland's first driver lineup.
