Adrian Newey will leave McLaren to join the fledgling F1 team Red Bull Racing in 2006, according to British media reports. It was earlier reported that the highly lauded technical director and designer was only contracted to the Woking based frontrunner until January, amid the apparent interest of old employer Williams.
Newey joined McLaren in 1997, penning the 1998 and 1999 title winners and the quickest car of the 2005 field, the Mercedes powered MP4-20.
Curiously, 46-year-old Newey nearly switched to Jaguar - Red Bull's former Ford-owned guise - in 2001, but was convinced at the eleventh hour by Ron Dennis to stay put. He said in July that he almost made the switch because he had started to feel 'empty' and 'unmotivated'.
