New engine to give Renault boost - Symonds
07 December 2005Renault engineering chief Pat Symonds says that the switch from 3-litre V10 to 2.4-litre V8 engines will enable his team to become even more competitive in 2006. Renault initially struggled with its V10 engine after returning to F1, trialling a radical design for a couple of seasons before binning it in favour of a more tried and tested format.

"While we had a great car, engine and driver last season, the engine was a bit old fashioned," Symonds said. "It was heavier and had a higher centre of gravity than most so the new V8 rule will level the playing field."
"We have a lot going on and we are very busy," Symonds said of the team's preparations this winter.
Renault is currently testing with a limited V10 engine until its new car is ready in January.
