Ferrari not stirred by Vodafone departure
24 December 2005Ferrari is putting on a brave face after losing major sponsor Vodafone to rival McLaren Mercedes from 2007 onwards. Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo says the team is in no rush to find a replacement and that they had already secured a long-term title sponsorship deal with Philip Morris - owners of the Marlboro brand.
"We couldn't offer Vodafone the primary role they asked because we had renewed with Philip Morris which is a very important deal for us," Montezemolo said.
Vodafone was after title sponsorship - which it gets at McLaren, but could not get at Ferrari. Montezemolo went on to say there were plenty of companies wanting to sponsor Ferrari and that they would pick and choose over the coming year.
