Karthikeyan has eye on 2007
06 January 2006With the news that Williams has signed Alex Wurz as its third driver, the chances of Narain Karthikeyan maintaining a reasonably high-profile drive in F1 in 2006 were dealt a severe blow. While Frank Williams has not ruled out taking on Karthikeyan as a second test driver, the Indian will undoubtedly be looking around - and maybe hope to persuade the new Super Aguri team his sponsor backing is worth considering.
Karthikeyan's manager Pier Hunisett says that the goal is to keep Karthikeyan in the spotlight in 2006 so that he can step back into a regular race drive in 2007 when there will be a lot more movement in the driver market.
"The objective for 2006 has to be to keep Narain involved in Formula One throughout this season as a lot is likely to change for 2007," Hunisett told Autosport. "As long as he keeps his profile up he could be in a good position by the end of the year."
Karthikeyan is widely viewed to be the key to breaking into the lucrative Indian market and the powers that be in F1 will be reluctant to see him vanish.
