Toyota engine chief Luca Marmorini says that his team has responded well to the challenge of designing and building the V8 in what was a relatively short time frame. The team has been testing its new car since before Christmas.
"After six years there is a good know-how in the Toyota team, and this engine is the result of our experience," Marmorini said. "What is important is that we are a young and flexible team. We accepted the V8 as a challenge, and we enjoyed it because it was something different and technically stimulating."
"With the move from V10 to V8 engines in 2006, it has been extremely beneficial to have the TF106 package running in the November-December tests," he added. "By waiting until January, it would be too long to react and change long-lead parts in time for the first race. We were able to confirm things that we tested on the dyno and generally we have maximised our time. All drivers have given us positive feedback in terms of performance and reliability, so we were already confident that we had a raceable package, even if the rate of development never stops."
