Heikki Kovalainen set the pace on the second day of testing this week at the Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona. The Renault test driver clocked a best lap of 1m14.955s late in a very busy day where he covered 144 laps of the 4.6km circuit. Rubens Barrichello was second fastest in the Honda ahead of Fernando Alonso.

Alonso's day came to an abrupt stop after just 45 laps when his car ground to a halt. He had done enough to stay third fastest ahead of Anthony Davidson and Ricardo Zonta in fifth.

Red Bull's David Coulthard finished sixth fastest but his RB2 ground to a halt after 97 laps. The second Red Bull of Christian Klien was eighth fastest - the two Bulls split by Mark Webber's Williams.

Eighteen drivers were in action on a warm and sunny day where air temperature reached 18 degrees Centigrade and the track well over 40 degrees.

Ferrari had the busiest day with Massa and Gené covering 223 laps between them and setting the tenth and sixteenth fastest times. Honda was the next busiest with 221 laps.

BMW joined the test today with Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica finishing eleventh and fourteenth while McLaren's first day featured de la Rosa in ninth and Raikkonen thirteenth.

Tonio Liuzzi took over from Neel Jani at Scuderia Toro Rosso while Super Aguri kicked off a test of some aero parts with Takuma Sato finishing bottom of the time sheets after 76 laps.

Testing at Barcelona continues tomorrow.
