Alonso thought pole was lost
10 June 2006 / Results / PhotosFernando Alonso admitted he thought he had lost pole position after the first flying laps in the final knock-out qualifying session. Alonso crossed the line just after Schumacher and was just shy of the Ferrari's time. After changing tyres he managed to steal pole in the final moments of the session.
"I had a little mistake in the last sector of my first lap and on the radio they told me we were second but close to Michael," Alonso said. "I thought we may have lost pole in that but we had a second chance with a new set of tyres and I didn't make a mistake so it's great to take pole."
"It will be interesting to see the long runs because I don't think anyone has done more than 5 or 6 lap runs so far this weekend," Alonso added. "We're confident in the tyre and strategy and the pole will make it easier for sure."
