Schumacher fastest in final practice
10 June 2006 / Results / PhotosMichael Schumacher set a clear pace in final practice for the British Grand Prix. The German stopped the clock in 1m20.919s to finish almost half a second ahead of Nick Heidfeld as BMW continued to show good pace at Silverstone. Felipe Massa was third, but 0.7s off his team mate's pace.
The weather is still very summery at Silverstone. The sun is shining and at 10.30am air temperature had already climbed to 26 degrees Centigrade and the track to 36 degrees. Conditions are set to get even hotter before qualifying.
The session was almost halted in the first half when Takuma Sato lost control of his Super Aguri an crashed into the wall at the Maggots/Becketts complex. Team mate Montagny later also stopped in the final sector.
But at the sharp end of the grid, Kimi Raikkonen recovered from yesterday's fuel pump problem to go fourth fastest in the dying moments of the session ahead of Fisichella and Alonso - the Renaults 0.9s off Schumacher's leading pace.
Rubens Barrichello was seventh ahead of Villeneuve in the second BMW and Toro Rossos Liuzzi and Speed found the groove at last to round off the top ten.
