Qualifying crowd unaffected by World Cup

Qualifying crowd unaffected by World Cup

11 June 2006

Following a record turnout for a Friday at the British Grand Prix, Silverstone has announced another bumper crowd figure for day two of the three day event, despite clashing with England's opening game of the World Cup. 65,000 fans, equalling last year's Saturday crowd, enjoyed yet another tense, gripping qualifying session which saw reigning Champion Alonso take pole position,

Away from the track, and following the Formula One qualifying session, there were equally impressive crowds watching Beckham and his England team take on Paraguay in the football. Silverstone had originally planned to show the game 'live' on three giant screens around the outside of the circuit but, such was the demand, the vast majority of fans left the grandstands to watch the football.

Richard Phillips, Managing Director of Silverstone Circuits Limited, consulted with F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone who agreed that, with the safety of fans a priority, the game
should be shown on trackside screens as well. Phillips commented: "We've had another fantastic day here at Silverstone. The new qualifying format has added a real edge to proceedings and seems to be extremely popular with the fans. We're disappointed not to have a British driver starting tomorrow's race in the top 10, but I've no doubt we'll have another big crowd tomorrow, and a thrilling race for them to enjoy.

"After the race we've also got a number of drivers, both past and present, joining Status Quo on stage at the Grand Prix Party. We've got a superb package lined up for the fans tomorrow and we're looking forward to a glorious British Grand Prix."
