Now Juan Pablo Montoya announced his departure at McLaren, Montoya will join NASCAR next season, it will be interesting to speculate who will join Fernando Alonso at McLaren in 2007. Gary Paffett believes that McLaren's protégé Lewis Hamilton is doing great in GP2 but doesn't have the best cards to race in a McLaren next season.
Paffett believes he has a better chance to race in Formula One than Hamilton as he gained a lot more experience than Hamilton in an F1 car already. "Lewis is doing a good job in GP2, but I'm driving a Formula 1 car around and he's not," Paffett told ITV-F1.com about his chances to race next season. "I'm doing a good job for the team, I've developed as a driver and I'm quite useful now to the team."
"If you want to race a Formula 1 car you've got to have driven one, and that's what I've got going for me, so I'm in a better position as I see it."
But Paffett is realistic enough to realise there are more drivers in the market to race alongside Fernando Alonso. He said: "Ideally I'd like to go in with McLaren, but obviously if there isn't a seat available then, sure, we'd be quite happy to go somewhere else and race. My main aim is to get in a race seat, so if we have to go elsewhere to do that then no problem."
