Former Toyota F1 driver Cristiano da Matta was flown to hospital on Thursday when his car collided with a deer on-track during an open Champ Car test. When arrived in the hospital Da Matta underwent emergency surgery.
The 32-year-old Da Matta was flown to the Theda Clark Memorial Hospital where the operation took place. Champ Car's medical Director Dr. Chris Pinderski commented on the situation: "After arriving at Theda Clark Medical Center a head CT scan showed Cristiano had suffered a subdural hematoma. He was urgently taken to the operating room for surgical removal of the hematoma and is now being observed in the intensive care unit."
Da Matta was actively involved in Formula One when he raced for the Toyota F1 team in 2003 and 2004. Last year he returned to Champ Car.
