Monza day 3: Massa fastest, Button crashes
31 August 2006 / Results / PhotosFelipe Massa dominated the final day of testing this week at Monza setting a lap of 1m21.098s to finish the day 0.8s ahead of Fernando Alonso and a full second clear of team mate Michael Schumacher. The day, however was marred by a big crash for Jenson Button.
There were a number of red flags today, two caused by the Honda team. Rubens Barrichello caused one when his 2007-spec Honda engine blew up and Jenson Button had a big crash, destroying his car. The British driver emerged unscathed, but the car was too damaged to repair at the track.
Heikki Kovalainen, the favourite to replace Fernando Alonso at Renault came to a stop on track with an electrical problem and Williams' Nico Rosberg also stopped on track.
In the final twenty minutes of the day Christian Klien spun off and caused a brief halt to the track action while his Red Bull was recovered.
In total twenty drivers were in action today.
The Italian Grand Prix takes place at Monza next week.
